UNITED METHODIST WOMEN
Have you noticed the beautifully decorated tree in our
sanctuary during the Christmas season? Like many church sanctuaries
around the world, our tree is decorated with special handmade ornaments
called Chrismons. What is the history and significance of the Chrismon
tree? The idea of the Chrismon tree was conceived in 1957 by
Frances Kipps Spencer, a member of the Lutheran Church of the Ascension in
Danville, VA, who wanted to create something as an offering to God.
While searching for a way to honor Christ, she came across some
drawings of designs called "Chrismon" - which is a combination of
parts of two words: CHRIST and MONogram - a monogram of Christ.
These monograms were drawn or carved by early Christians and were
discovered in many places - on jewelry or utensils, on doors or buildings,
and on walls of the catacombs in Rome. Over
the years, these ornaments have developed to include other symbols from
Christian history which refer to our Lord.
Chrismons are handmade according to certain specifications and cannot
be purchased in a store and should not be combined on a tree with any other
type of ornament. Mark your calendars and join us at our UMW General
Meeting on Tuesday, September 30, 7:00pm., to learn more about the history
and significance of the Chrismon and have the opportunity to make a Chrismon
for our ORUMC Chrismon tree. We
will provide instructions and supplies.
You won't want to miss this evening of fun, fellowship, and, of
course, some good food. Babysitting
will be provided upon request. For
questions concerning UMW, please contact Donna Cleveland, 643-0715. Submitted by Donna Cleveland |

NEW ORUMC LOGO
Come and see our new ORUMC Logo! Some time back, our
Church Council appointed a Branding Committee and requested that they work
on developing/designing an ORUMC Logo, colors, and signage that represented
our newly formed mission, vision and values statements.
This Committee has worked diligently, including the use of a Branding
Wheel with many of our congregants, and has completed a Logo that represents
the vision, reputation and future of our congregation.
Everyone is invited to attend our next Church Council meeting at 7pm
on Tuesday, July 29th, to see the new
Logo and to hear a presentation offered by our Branding Committee.
This will be presented at the first portion of the Council meeting
should you not be able to stay for the entire meeting.
Please come and be a part of this exciting presentation. Submitted by Rev. Dr. Michael Kurtz
